China Fashion Show Meets with Canadian ApprovalA fashion show of Chinese folk costumes staged Thursday in the reception hall of the Chinese embassy and attended by Canada's First Lady Aline Chretien and hundreds of other distinguished guests."It's a very nice show and the clothes are beautiful," said the first lady in the Chinese embassy, where other dignitaries in attendance included Mrs. Amn't Dhaliwal, wife of the Canadian Minister of Fisheries, and Mrs. Sharon Vanclif, wife of the Minister of Agriculture. Hundreds of people attended the show. Smiles and applause greeted every model parading on a makeshift stage to Chinese music, while wearing costumes of China's 56 nationalities. a slide show on nationality people, ranging from the Uygurs in northwest China to the Tibetans in the southwest, followed the show. A Chinese model in the costume of Tibetan woman presented a piece of "hada" to the first lady. "Hada" is a piece of white silk used as a greeting gift to express friendship and hospitality among the Tibetan and Mongol nationalities. Two Chinese dressed in the garb of a Qing dynasty "Emperor" and "Empress" was another highlight of the event. Many Canadian guests requested the "Emperor" and "Empress" pose for pictures after the fashion show. Mutual interest promotes mutual understanding, said a Canadian official before Prime Minister Jean Chretien headed the country's largest mission to China in February. Lin Sha, wife of the Chinese Ambassador Mei Ping, said she was happy to see so many Canadian guests attending the Chinese fashion show in Ottawa.
