Border Trade Thrives in Tibet
Ports in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region have actively promoted local economic development in recent years.
With many ports along thousands of kilometers of its border, Tibet reported a border trade volume of 98 million US dollars last year, up 47 percent over 1999.
The border export volume last year in the region reached 91 million US dollars, accounting for a majority of the total border trade volume.
There are 65 enterprises in Tibet engaged in border trade and major export items including stockbreeding products, cattle, cashmere, raw silk, household electronic appliances and machinery.
A local economic official attributes the growth in border trade to the region's effort to expanding the border market and improve the economic environment for border-trade enterprises.
Tibet has decided to make border trade a more important component and a new growth point for local economic development during the Tenth Five-Year Plan Period (2001-2005).
