Int'l Orchid Exhibition Opens in Taipei

The 2001 Taiwan International Orchid Exhibition opened Thursday in Taipei, with more than 20,000 potted orchids of various kinds on display, a Taipei media reported.

Representatives of international orchid-growing organizations such as the American Orchid Community and the All Japan Orchid Society are attending the show to show orchids grown by their members.

The show also features an exhibit of the orchid's natural habitat and a section on floral designs featuring the plant.

A local official was cited as saying that Taiwan's technology in butterfly orchid cultivation leads the world, with 30 million to 40 million butterfly orchid seedlings and plants exported annually, representing a substantial foreign exchange income for the island.
