Cross-Strait Foundation to Be Founded

A cross-strait common market foundation proposed by Kuomintang Vice Chairman Vincent C. Siew will be formally inaugurated next Monday, according to reports from Taipei Thursday.

Siew, who will serve as board chairman of the new foundation, said that its purpose will be to promote and study the framework for a cross-strait common market, so as to lay the basis for cross-strait peace and political integration.

As the organization's head, he may travel to China's mainland for this purpose, Siew said.

Siew's proposal has been echoed by many leading Taiwanese entrepreneurs, including Morris Chang, chairman of Taiwan Semi-Conductor Manufacturing Corp., Kao Chin-yen, chairman of the President Enterprises Group and Wu Tung-liang, Chairman of Taishin Bank.

Siew said he hopes that the foundation will bridge the gap between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait so as to build peaceful and mutually prosperous cross-strait ties.
