Chinese HK Suspends Import of Cloven-Hoofed Animals from Netherlands

The Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department announced Thursday that it had suspended the import of live pigs, cattle, sheep and goats from The Netherlands in view of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease.

A spokesman for the department stressed that the ban was a precautionary measure for the prevention of the introduction of new strains of virus of the disease into Hong Kong.

The disease is an animal disease which is not a public health hazard. It is an endemic disease occurring in pigs in South East Asia, including Hong Kong.

"The department reminds pig farmers every year to take precaution against the disease which can best be controlled here by vaccination," he said.
