Beijing to Stage Cutting-Edge Technologies

Beijing will stage a number of cutting-edge technologies developed by various high-tech enterprises at the upcoming Beijing International High-tech Week, scheduled on May 10-15, 2001.

To be exhibited are high-tech machinery such as buses powered by hybrid energy sources, and equipment that can save blood lost during surgical operations for future use by the patient.

Sources said that intellectual property rights of these technologies belong to enterprises situated in Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area (BDA).

The zone clinched 1.7 billion dollars worth of transactions at the 2000 International Week and was said to be the largest gainer of the yearly high-tech event. It is expecting a better performance at this year's high-tech fair.

The BDA was set up on August 25,1995 and has attracted 2.68 billion US dollars in investment by the end of 2000.

Large multinationals, such as Nokia, General Electric, Lucent, Bell and ABB, have set up operations at BDA.

International High-tech week is an annual event sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, the Ministry of Education, and the Beijing Municipal People's Government.
