Aquatic Products Becomes Jiangxi's Second Largest Export

Years of effort have lead to aquatic products becoming the second largest export after grain in east China's Jiangxi Province, according to the latest statistics of the provincial fishery department.

The output value of the aquatic sector surpassed 10 billion yuan (1.2 billion US dollars) last year, 1.15 billion yuan (139 million US dollars) more than 1999, the statistics show.

The aquatic output was 1.27 million tons last year.

Special aquatic products contributed the largest increase both in output volume and value. They amounted to 264,000 tons and 4.1 billion yuan (494 million US dollars), up 17.5 percent and 25 percent respectively, according to the statistics.

Special aquatic products refers to those high value-added aquatic creatures, such as eel, crab and shrimp, which are exported to Japan and Southeast Asia.
