Mount Wutai to Build Recreational Center

Work will start soon on a large tourism and recreational center on the Wutai Mountain, a holy place for Buddhists in China and a well-known scenic spot in north China's Shanxi Province.

The center will integrate facilities for performance, showing films, medical care, catering and shopping in an effort to improve the local tourism environment.

The Wutai Mountain is a member of the first group of national-level tourism attractions designated by the State Council, China's highest administrative body.

With a long history and cool days in summer, the mountain is an ideal resort for summer vacationers.

The resort has greatly improved its facilities since it opened to foreign tourists in 1983. It has easy access to highways and railways, and chartered flights to Beijing are available. International and domestic direct telephone service and digital and analog telephone services are available as well.

The center will cover an area of nearly three hectares and have a total floor space of 12,000 square meters. It will be located in Taihui Town surround by the Wutai Mountain.

Facilities to be built will include a tourism and medical care center with sauna, gymnasium, a restaurant serving Chinese food and another serving Western food and a supermarket. The shopping center will sell souvenirs and arts and crafts with local characteristics.

The center will be built at a total cost of nearly 80 million yuan (US$9.63 million), with the total investment to be recovered within six years.
