Taiwan Compatriots to China's Mainland Topped 3 Million Last Year

As shown in statistics by relevant departments, Taiwanese came to mainland for visiting relatives, travelling and other exchanges topped 3 million in 2000, up 36.3 percent over the same period of 1999, making the Taiwan visitors to Mainland up to 20 million in all. During the same period, mainlanders went to Taiwan for visiting relatives and engaging in various exchanges numbered 100,000, with the grand total added up to 485,000.

Economic exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Straits are becoming more and more extensive. Indirect trade volume between the two sides increased by 31.1 percent over the same period in 1999 to reach US $30.533 billion last year. Exports from mainland to Taiwan hit US $5.04 billion, a rise of 27.6 percent as against that in 1999. Taiwan's exports to mainland totaled US$ 25.49 billion, 30.6 percent higher than the same period in 1999. Total trade volume accumulated to US$ 204.966 billion over the years. China's mainland approved 3,082 Taiwan investment projects, representing a 22.16 percent surge from a year earlier, contractual volume from Taiwan to mainland reached US $3.988 billion, a jump of 16.49 percent from previous year. The volume of investment from Taiwan to the mainland over the previous years has been added up to US$ 49.744 billion with US$ 27.266 billion being actually pledged.
