China to Shift All Applied Tech Institutes to CompaniesPresident of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Lu Yongxiang stressed Wednesday that all institutes engaged in the research of applied technologies must be shifted into money-earning companies. When inspecting the CAS' first success in the field, Beijing Zhongke Keyi Technology Development Co., Ltd., Lu said the transformation will be his academy's most important work. The company, originating from Beijing Research and Development Center of Scientific Instruments under the CAS, is now mainly manufacturing and selling electron microscopes, vacuum apparatus and advanced medical equipment. Lu cited the company as a model for the other 12 research bodies which are also targeted to become high-tech companies. Once an academic body creates applied technologies, it should prepare itself to organize a company and manufacture advanced products, Lu said. Technological innovation must be combined with industrialization and market occupation, Lu said. "Chinese high-tech enterprises should participate in more global competition," he added. Although the company is separated from the CAS, Lu still promised to give them full support, including funds and preferential policies.
