Foot-and-Mouth Cases Hit Daily Record in Britain

Forty-five new cases of foot-and- mouth disease have been confirmed in Britain on Tuesday, the highest daily total so far, bringing the total number of outbreaks across the country to 394, the Agriculture Ministry said. Most of the fresh cases were in Cumbria, northwest England, the area where the livestock virus appears to be concentrated.

Smaller clusters of foot-and-mouth cases have also been reported in Dumfries and Galloway, southwest Scotland, and Devon, southwest England.

Official government figures released Tuesday show that, since the outbreak began, 223,000 animals have been culled out of nearly 350,000 earmarked to be destroyed.

Meanwhile, a ban on British meat exports has been extended to April 4 by the European Union (EU) vets. The EU first acted to stop exports on February 21 and the latest decision will be reviewed on next Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, British troops have been drafted in to help with the disposal of animal carcasses in Devon and Cumbria.
