Pakistan's Shia, Sunni Leaders Vow to Promote Harmony

Sanctity of the holy month of Muharram (April) would be strictly observed by all sects in order to promote religious harmony, forbearance and tolerance in Pakistan's capital.

This was the consensus evolved by Ulema (Muslim scholars) belonging to Shia and Sunni sects besides members of the Citizens Peace Committee at a meeting organized by Deputy Commissioner Hamid Ali Khan here on Tuesday.

The Ulema, in their quest for peace during Muharram, agreed to limited use of loud-speakers, passage of Muharram processions on specified routes, refraining from speeches injurious to beliefs of other sects and honoring ban on display of weapons.

Expressing sentiments of unanimity during the meeting, the Ulema agreed to fully honor the code of ethics formulated by the District administration to ensure perfect maintenance of peace during Muharram.

The district administration on the other hand assured complete security both in urban and rural areas of the Islamabad Capital Territory.
