IC Card Producer Gemplus to Expand Production in China

Gemplus of France, the world's largest IC card producer, has made a decision to build its Asian IC card production center in Tianjin with an investment of 100 million yuan (US$12 million).

Gemplus Tianjin New Technology Co., solely owned by the French IC card producer, has recently signed a contract on a land-use right involving 4.86 hectares with Tianjin New Technology Industrial Park.

The French company made the decision in response to the increasing demand for IC cards and SIM cards for mobile phones in China.

The new IC card production center is expected to be operational by 2002 with an annual output value of 1 billion yuan (US$121 million).

As the world's largest IC card producer, Gemplus accounts for 43 percent of the world market.
