Animals of Chinese Zodiac Used in Packaging

Coca-Cola (China) Co. Ltd. announced it would use the 12 animals of the traditional Chinese zodiac in its packaging before this year's Spring Festival on January 24, the latest issue of Beijing Review reports.

The Chinese designs would be used for every 12 tins of cola. It was the first time the company used Chinese cultural designs, making the new packaging a collector's item. It also represented an example of the localization of a major international company.

The lovely designs included12 cartoon figures, such as the "Magic Snake" and "Righteous Dog". Since the policies of reform and opening up were adopted, these animals have been embraced not only by the Chinese but also the people of other countries. Thus they have international fame.

Using souvenir packaging is a traditional way many name-brand products advertise themselves. Every year Coca-Cola presents new packaging related to events such as the Olympic Games, the NBA, the World Cup of football and Christmas. Such packaging has proved to be popular with global consumers.

Coca-Cola's designs meld traditions, fashions, personalities and dreams. Because the animal-design tins are limited in number, they have an enhanced value for collectors of Coca-Cola memorabilia.
