Russia, Yugoslavia Call for Actions to End Violence

Russia and Yugoslavia on Monday called for emergency measures to end violence and violation of existing borders in the Balkan region.

Europe should take emergency measures to stem terrorist activities in the region, said visiting Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and his Yugoslav counterpart, Goran Svilanovic.

Ivanov stressed that Yugoslavia should become a base for peace and stability in the Balkans.

Ivanov also held talks with Yugoslav Prime Minister Zoran Zizic.

In a statement following their talks, Ivanov reiterated Russia' s support for Yugoslavia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He said the issue of Kosovo and the ties between the two Yugoslav republics -- Serbia and Montenegro -- are Yugoslavia's internal affairs and must be resolved within the framework of Yugoslavia.

They also discussed economic ties between the two countries.

Ivanov on the same day also met separately with Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. Both agreed that a stable Europe would be impossible without a stable Balkan region.

Earlier in the day, Ivanov met with Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica to discuss ways to ease tensions in the Balkans and enhance bilateral ties.

Ivanov arrived here Sunday in an effort to build a common diplomatic front on the latest Balkan crisis.
