In 2000, the total output of China's soft drink industry reached 14.91million tons, an increase of 25.7 percent over that of 1999, indicating a growth for 21 consecutive years.

The industry had kept a yearly increase averaging 23 percent through 1980 to 1999 and it will keep a strong momentum of growth in the new century.

Alongside with the market competition and development of enterprises some provinces stood out the main force in the industry.

In 2000, the top five are Guangdong and Zhejiang Provinces, Shanghai Municipality, Jiangsu Province and Hebei. They produced 9.51 million-tons of soft drink, accounting for 64 percent of China's total output, an increase of 29 percent. Guangdong ranked first with the output of 3.51million tons, accounting for 24 percent and Jiangsu produced about 920,000-ton soft drink witnessing the highest increase rate of 51percent among the five.

Such large-sized enterprises as Coca Cola, Pepsico, and China's top ten soft drink enterprises including Wahaha and Jianlibao, turned out about 9.76 million ton soft drink, accounting for 65 percent of China's total production. In 2000, the medium- and small-sized enterprises were reported to have developed in pace with the large enterprises with some new enterprises to join in at the same time.

In addition, the varieties of soft drink are changed in accordance with the market needs. At present, the bottled soft drink ranks first with its production volume up to 5.54 million tons, followed by carbonic acid drink of 4.2 million tons, and then the tea drink amounting to 1.85 million tons, of which the Rising Sun (Xurisheng) accounts for 1.03 million tons. Experts say that the tea drink is very popular abroad and it has great potential in the domestic market too.
