Sino-Tanzanian Pharmaceutical Factory Starts Production

The Tanzansino United Pharmaceuticals Ltd., a joint venture between China and Tanzania, started operation Monday.

The factory, which is located on the suburb of Dar es Salaam, is capable of producing about 1 billion tablets annually worth millions of US dollars.

It has been designed and constructed strictly in line with the international Good Manufacturing Practice, and it has gone through all necessary quality and environmental processes, according to Wu Shaozhong, the plant's general manager.

The 2.05 million dollars project, invested by the Chinese side and its Tanzanian counterpart with a ratio of 55 percent and 45 percent respectively, mainly produces medicines treating epidemic diseases in Africa like cholera, malaria and even AIDS in the future.

Addressing a ceremony to mark the operation, Zanzibar President Amani Karume praised, on behalf of the Tanzanian government, China 's continuous aid to Tanzania, one of its traditional friends in Africa.

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania with its own president and parliament.

On the same occasion, Tanzanian Minister of Defense Philemon Sarungi expressed hope that this joint venture would set a good example to attract more Chinese investments to deepen bilateral economic cooperation.

On his side, visiting Vice Governor of Shanxi Province Yang Zhiming told his hosts that this plant marks the first step toward the economic and trade cooperation between his province, which is located in northern China, and the Tanzanian authorities.

Rich in mineral resources, especially coal, Shanxi Province is the largest energy base in China with some 12,000 enterprises in operation involving power, chemicals, machine building, pharmaceuticals, building materials, textile and other industries.
