Arafat Visits Jordan on Peace, Arab Summit
Visiting Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat met with Jordanian King Abdullah Bin Hussein discussing ways of reviving the Palestinian-Israeli peace process and the agenda of the upcoming Arab summit in Amman on March 27-28.
During the talks, Arafat briefed Abdullah on his just-concluded Arab tour to rally support for the Palestinians and their demands to end israel's blockade on Palestinian territories. King Abdullah stressed Jordan's support to the Palestinian demands to end the siege, which has caused great losses in Palestinian economy.
Abdullah also stressed that a just and comprehensive peace will only be achieved in the region by implementing legitimate international resolutions and by the retrieval of legitimate Arab rights, particularly the right of the Palestinians to set up an independent state on their own soil.
Meanwhile, Arafat expressed his appreciation for the king's support for the Palestinians.
The two leaders also discussed preparations for the Amman Arab summit, which is expected to focus on the stalled peace process, particularly on the Palestinian track, the plight of the Iraqi people under international sanctions and ways of consolidating Arab cooperation in the face of economic globalization.
Arafat left for Yemen Monday afternoon to continue his Arab- nation tour after a two-day visit to the kingdom.
