Top Legislator Stresses Relations With Albania

Chinese Top Legislator Meets Albanian Parliament Speaker
Chinese top legislator Li Peng said Monday that China wants to consolidate its friendly relations with Albania on the basis of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks during a meeting with Skender Gjinushi, speaker of the People's Assembly of Albania, who arrived here Sunday with a parliamentary delegation on a six-day official goodwill visit to China.

Li said Chinese people respect the approach of development and social system chosen by the Albanian people. China's NPC is ready to work with the Albanian parliament to push forward bilateral relations.

Albania was one of the earliest to establish full diplomatic relations with China. The two countries signed a joint communique last year, which underlines the principles on and key areas of cooperation.

Gjinushi told Li that his delegation consists of members of major political parties of his country, a move demonstrating that the Albanian parliament is keen on developing relations with China.

The Albanian speaker said Albanian people admire China's reform, opening-up policies and its economic miracles, which deeply impressed Albanian delegations to China. He expressed the wish that Albania and China would strengthen economic cooperation.

In addition, Gjinushi said the Albanian parliament, like the Albanian Government, will continue to observe its one-China policy, and support China's policy on the issue of Taiwan.
