Philippine Marines Wounded in Grenade Attack by Muslim Rebels

Three Marine elements were seriously wounded Saturday in a grenade attack perpetrated by the Muslim rebels in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao.

The victims were reportedly conducting patrol in the province of Lanao del Sur, west Mindanao, when two notorious Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commanders suddenly tossed a grenade towards them, the Philippine News Agency said Monday.

On the same day, an Army report said military installations in two other sites on the island were separately harassed by the MILF guerrillas.

No soldier was reportedly hurt in the attacks, launched four days after the government announced that the MILF formally accepted the resumption of peace talks between the two sides.

The Government peace-talk panel is negotiating with the MILF leaders on venue of the peace talks. The MILF side wanted the talks to be held abroad.

Meanwhile, the MILF demanded return to its control of its former stronghold camp Abubakar which was overrun by the military before the talks start, as well as participation in the talks by a representative of the Organization of Islamic Conference.
