Rare Bird Poacher Gets Two Years Jail Sentence in China

Hu Zhiyi, a principal poacher of rare birds, was sentenced to two years in prison in central China's Hunan Province.

Hu illegally entered Dongting Lake, one of China's largest habitats for winter migrating birds, with six other accomplices in October last year, killing over 460 small white-forehead geese and swan geese, which are species on China's preserved animal list.

This has been the gravest rare bird poaching case that occurred in the lake area, according to sources with the local police.

Three of his accomplices were given jail sentences of eight months to one year by the court in Yueyang, where the Dongting, China's second largest fresh water lake, is located.

The rest of the accomplices were either fined or taken into custody.

Most of the birds are flying northwards at this time of year. Staff with the lake reserve said they have worked closely with the police to ensure that migrating birds can return to their home safely.
