Method to Detect Cattle Bone Powder Created in China

China has discovered a way to detect cattle bone powder in animal feed through genetic technology.

By using a genetic screening technique called the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, the Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has detected cattle genes in imported animal feed.

A source with the bureau said the technique, created by a group of scientists from the bureau and the Shanghai Agricultural Academy, provides an effective method of inspecting animal feed in order to better prevent such products from countries suffering from foot-and-mouth disease.

China's Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed that the country is free from the disease.

On March 1, the country issued a ban on imports of animal bone powder from countries and regions suffering from the disease.
