Fixed line operator China Netcom plans to buy over 500,000 kilometers of Corning's LEAF optical fiber cable over the next three years.

China Netcom is one of six licensed facilities-based operators in China, and aims to set itself up as a new generation IP carrier to compete against China Telecom.

China Netcom will deploy Corning LEAF fiber in its network backbone connecting 17 major cities across southeast China. During its first phase, the CNC network will contain approximately 12,000 kilometers of cable.

No financial details on the deal were released.
