An earthquake with a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale rocked Nicaragua's western Pacific coast on Sunday morning, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The quake hit at 9:43 local time (1543 GMT) and was centered 206 kilometers west of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, said the Nicaraguan Association for National Land Research. The temblor, which originated 12 kilometers below the surface, was also felt in the capital city.
Located on a quake-prone area, Nicaragua has suffered more than 1,300 earthquakes this year. Experts have predicted that Managua would be hit by a violent earthquake even stronger than the one seen in 1972, which killed nearly 10,000 people and destroyed almost the whole city of Managua.
