Superstitious Teacher Kills 13 People by Poisoning

Yin Xianping, a superstitious primary school teacher from Shaoyang City of central China's Hunan Province, has been detained for being suspected of attempting to kill 37 people by poisoning.

Until now, 13 of the people who were poisoned by Yin have died over the past three years, including his wife Xie Xiangzhen, with the remaining 24 suffering from varied degrees of poisoning and after-effects,ccording to local police.

Yin, a native of Dongkou County, Shaoyang City, used to be a teacher with Wolong Primary School in Youlan Township. He has been chronically ill since 1994 and has not been fully cured despite great efforts and a long-time medical treatment.

One night in 1997, Yin had a dream in which an old man told him that Yin must kill 12 people in order to get his diseases completely cured. Yin believed in the dream.

From July 1997 to January this year, Yin used a method of injecting poison into candy or mixing it with rice or other dishes in 36 separate cases, in attempts to kill people and try to seek treatment for his diseases.

Among the 37 people Yin poisoned, the oldest was 59 years old and the youngest was just seven months old.

Yin's terrible actions went unnoticed as he lived out his daily life. Yin was known among his neighbors to be a man of mild temper and few words, and symptoms shown by his victims were quite similar to that of epilepsy, said the local police sources.
