Researchers Develop Software for Image ReconstructionResearchers from the Xi'an based Northwest China University have developed software for image reconstruction based on skull measurement.Experts from Xi'an believe that the technique is of great importance for determining identities in detecting crimes as well as in archaeological, anatomical and surgical research. Led by Zhou Mingquan, professor at the Computer Department of the University, a research team developed three-dimensional image reconstruction technique based on computer science, medical jurisprudence, systems engineering, mathematics and art. With the technology, the skull-based image construction can be made without much altering of facial characteristics on the screen. The reconstructed images will make it much easier for the police to identify nameless skeletons. The technology can also help reconstruct the appearance of a patient with disfigured face or that of an ancient man. Image reconstruction in medical jurisprudence is an identification-determination oriented science. In past years, Chinese legal medical experts have conducted image reconstruction with painting and sculpture techniques, based on fragmentary domestic and foreign data. The handwork took time and effort and the reconstructed images were less precise.
