Palestinian Mortar Shells Hit Israel, Wounding Soldier

An Israeli soldier was lightly wounded Sunday evening when two mortar shells fired by Palestinian gunmen from the Gaza Strip hit a base of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in southern Israel.

Israeli Army Radio reported that this was the first such an attack from Gaza that had rocked Israeli territory.

The soldier in the Nahal Oz base located next to Kibbutz Nahal Oz, a collective farm, in the western Negev in southern Israel, was injured by a shrapnel of the shells that hit the main gate of the base. Two more mortar shells landed on the Nahal Oz road just west of the kibbutz.

In recent weeks, Palestinians have fired mortars at the Jewish settlements of Netzarim, Elei Sinai and Nisanit in Gaza.

Also on Sunday, Palestinian gunmen shot at two Israeli buses with light weapons near the settlement of Ofra northeast of the Palestinian-controlled West Bank city of Ramallah, but caused no injuries.

In another incident, Palestinian gunmen opened fire on an IDF patrol near the village of Salem east of the West Bank city of Nablus, some 50 kilometers north of Jerusalem, and no one was wounded.

The road was closed to traffic following the attack while the army searched the area for gunmen.
