Over 100 Injured in Anti-Globalization Protest

Full-scale clashes broke out between protesters campaigning against globalization and police during the last day of Italian Naples Global Forum, and more than 100 people were hurt at least.

Protesters engaged in running battles with police outside the Global Forum, according to the Italian news agency ANSA's reports.

Even the head of the anti-terrorist police, Paolo Tarantino, hurt his arm in falling during a scuffle while several other policemen were said to be suffering from bruises inflicted by the paving stones hurled at them.

Naples police chief Nicola Izzo said "several people" on both sides had been hurt. He estimated the number of demonstrators at around 6,000 and said that some "organized groups" among them had come to Naples looking for trouble.

Police later put the number of protesters hurt in the clashes at over 100, and the number of police at over 50. But no one was seriously hurt. Sixteen protesters have been arrested.

Police also seized several large firecrackers, some large chains, dozens of baseball bats and iron bars and pickaxes that were used to unearth the paved stones.

The Global Forum, staged in the Italian southern city from March 15 to 17, discussed how the internet and other new technology can improve the efficiency of national bureaucracies.
