Chinese Universities to Enroll 2.5 Million Students This Year

Chinese universities and colleges plan to enroll 2.5 million freshmen this year, an increase of 700, 000 or 13.6 percent over last year's level, sources at the ongoing annual enrollment conference said in Beijing Saturday.

The Ministry of Education plans to recruit 1.3 million students to pursue bachelor's degrees this year; the remainder will pursue master's or doctor's degrees.

Reform of the college entrance examination system will be stepped up. Eighteen provinces and cities will implement the "3+X" exam plan, with "3" standing for compulsory subjects like Chinese, mathematics and foreign languages, and "X" being electives from physics, chemistry, biology, politics, history and geography, or subjects that test students' practical abilities.

Moreover, on-line enrollment will be adopted nationwide this year, sources said.
