17 Die as Boat Sinks in the Caribbean Sea

At least 17 people drowned and 23 were missing in the Caribbean Sea on Thursday after a boat carrying more than 40 people, including illegal immigrants from the Dominican Republic, sank off the island of St. Martin, French police and officials said. Two survivors were rescued from the sea by fishermen and hospitalized for shock, officials said. The boat is thought to have sunk overnight six miles southwest of the island. There were contradictory reports of the number of victims as searches continued late Thursday night.
