HK Starts CensusThe 2001 Population Census of Hong Kong started Thursday."The information collected in a population census is vital to government planning and policy formulation, particularly in such fields as education, housing, transport, medical and social services," said a government spokesman, who called for public cooperation and support of the 13-day project. "The data are also important to the private sector in formulating business strategies and to researchers in conducting social and economic studies," he said. Hong Kong Commissioner for Census and Statistics Frederick Ho assured members of the public that data collected regarding individual persons and households would be kept strictly confidential. "Before our census officers start their work today, all of them have completed a declaration not to disclose to any unauthorized person any information that they have become aware of in the course of their duty," said Ho. Hong Kong to Conduct 2001 Population CensusThe government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) will conduct the 2001 Population Census from March 15 to March 27.The spokesman called for public cooperation and support of the population census.
