India Begins Production Of Intermediate Range Missiles

India had begun limited production of intermediate range missiles, code named Agni II, which would be inducted to the armed forces this year, Defence Minister George Fernandes said Thursday.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, the low house of the Indian parliament, Fernandes said the missile, with a range over 2,000 kilometers, could be configured to be used with any type of warhead.

Last January, India successfully test-fired its longer range version of Agni intermediate range ballistic missile, which was a two-stage all solid motor missile with a payload of one tone.

The minister told the parliament that the thrust of current modernization in the armed forces was on enhancement of surveillance capability, induction of force multipliers, surface to surface and surface to air missiles and acquisition of the state of the art platforms.
