Storms Hit Florida, Georgia in US

One person was killed and over a dozen people were injured as severe storms, including at least one tornado, struck towns in the states of Florida and Georgia early Thursday, reports reaching here said.

The reports quoted local officials as saying that a tornado touched down about 4 a.m. local time in Wausau, Florida. A 59-year- old man died and his wife was critically injured when their mobile home was destroyed.

In southwestern Georgia, the hardest-hit areas were near Whigham and Climax, neighboring towns in Grady and Decatur counties, where the storm hit about 6:30 a.m. local time.

Some 12 structures, including mobile homes and barns, were destroyed in the two Georgia counties.

At least five other people in Georgia and 10 in Florida suffered lesser injuries.

Tornado watches or warnings had been issued for parts of northern Florida, southern Georgia and southeastern Alabama, and some remained in effect at late morning Thursday.
