Macao Marks World Consumers' Rights Day
Macao exhibited various fake and shoddy products seized by the government Thursday in a bid to enhance the awareness of local residents on protecting the legitimate rights of consumers.
The items ranged from computers, telecommunications equipment, medicine to needlework and flavoring used in kitchens.
The move is part of the activities to mark the "March 15 -- World Consumers' Rights Day" in Macao, according to sources from the Macao Consumers' Commission.
The commission heard nearly 2,000 complaints and helped consumers whose rights were infringed upon last year.
Particularly, the commission has stepped up protection of the rights of tourists, as tourism is a pillar industry in the region. Visitors can express their complaints by dialing a hotline, the source said.
Macao will encourage fair consumption and let consumers know about the region's free economic system and enhance their confidence on the market, said Francis Tam Pak Yuen, secretary for economy and finance of the SAR government.
Every year, Macao stages various activities to help consumers protect their own rights.
