Shanghai to Set off Digital TV Station Coming New Year's Day

With one year's trial broadcasting as from last January 1, Shanghai, as reported, will formally set off its digital TV station in the coming New Year's Day.

In the first half of this year, the high-clarity digital TV will be introduced into the hotels where the APEC leaders are going to stay and so they'll have the chance to enjoy the high-clarity programs when they come to Shanghai this June.

Shanghai will achieve interactive program order of digital TV this July and the residents may order their favorite programs on the occasion.

According to Cheng Guang, vice director of the Shanghai Planning Committee, the development of digital TV will enter into a transitional period from technical preparation to market operation. Departments concerned have suggested that special stores for selling digital TV sets be opened up to ensure the quality of the sets, and clients there may enjoy free upgrade of the TV components in the future.

China Plans Own Digital TV Standard

Tsinghua University, China's foremost technology university, has joined with a Chinese-owned US technology partner in digital TV development.

The alliance is designed to forge a DTV transmission standard for China that combines spread-spectrum and orthogonal frequency-division multiplex technologies.

With an eye to future mobile applications, the standard, if successful, could leapfrog dated US and European specs, some observers said.
