Nortel Unveils Personal Internet Technology in HK

Nortel Networks Wednesday unveiled in Hong Kong its products and technology that it said will enable its Personal Internet initiative to ignite the global "content boom."

Nortel Networks Personal Internet will move beyond the existing content delivery services by building a new layer of network intelligence that is aware of the preferences of Internet users and the attributes of content being requested.

Using the Nortel Networks Personal Internet products, service providers and content publishers can help distribute personalized content across the Internet. Internet users can also get what they exactly want very efficiently online instead of having to go through websites one after another.

"The content boom is a major new market phenomenon, and bandwidth alone is insufficient to address growing demand," said Masood Tariq, president of Nortel Networks Asia Pacific.

"New network and content intelligence are also needed," he said. "Nortel Networks Personal Internet will deliver this network and content intelligence to address the instantaneous access needs of Asian end users, and will help service and content providers in the region meet these consumers' demands for new, customized services and focused content delivery."

Delivery of new content is expected to increase in line with the Asia Pacific region's high Internet growth rates, according to International Data Corporation (IDC).

IDC expects Internet Service Provider revenue in Asia Pacific to increase from approximately 6.1 billion US dollars in 1999 to 22 billion US dollars by 2004.
