Guangxi to Build More Power Generating Plants

South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will build more power plants with the installed capacity to increase 9 million kw in the 10th Five-Year-Plan period (2001-2005).

By the year of 2005, the region's total installed generating capacity will amount to 11.2 million kilowatts, said Li Zhaozhuo, chairman of the regional government.

According to Li, Guangxi will build at least six new hydropower stations in addition to Longtan hydropower station, which is now under construction on Hongshui River.

In the meantime, another six gas-firing power plants will be built in the region's southern coast and in Nanning, regional capital of Guangxi.

Construction of a number of new power transmission infrastructure will connect the power grids of Guangdong, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces. They will also be erected to facilitate the transmission of electricity from Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi to Guangdong where there are numerous export-oriented processing industries.

With these endeavors, the chairman hopes Guangxi will become an important base in the country's campaign to bring electricity to the poverty-stricken west China, but also provide adequate electric power to the economically prosperous eastern region.
