New Airport Planned in Kunming

China's Civil Aviation and Administration and the Planning Commission of Yunnan Province recently decided to go in for a feasibility study on the construction of a new international airport in Kunming.

According to Kunming's Spring City Evening, after several rounds of enlargement on its airport currently used which is merely 4.5 km away from the city proper, the flow of passengers has already been at a saturation point designed. To further enlarge the airport will mean a too large displacement that must be rejected in Kunming.

Contrarily, the new airport planned will be constructed in an area adjoining Songming County and Guandu District, to be built with double tracks and a designed capacity of 20 million persons/times in the near future. Then there will be a 30-kilometer expressway network to link up the airport with Kunming.

According to plan, the new airport is to be completed and open to flight in 2015. By then, Kunming will be a major interchange hub on the international aviation network.
