Chinese Explorers to Cross World's Fourth Largest Desert

A group of explorers in northwest China's Gansu Province will cross the Badain Jaran Desert, one of the fourth largest in the world, this coming Saturday.

The aim of the move is to challenge the ultimate endurance of human beings and support Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The expedition will be composed of five jeep drivers and three guides. They are scheduled to set off on March 17.

It will take eight or ten days to complete the trip which covers a distance of about 1,000 km.

This will be the first endeavor to cross the desert by motorcycle and automobile. If they succeed, the result will be included in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Badain Jaran Desert occupies 47,000 square kilometers in China' s Inner Mongolia, Gansu Province and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. It comprises many huge densely spread pyramid-shaped sand dunes, over 100 lakes and archeological ruins and has been put on the World Heritage list. Numerous explorers intended to cross the desert, but no one succeeded in doing so.
