Russian Duma Member Survives Assassination Attempt

A member of the Unity faction in Russia's State Duma, who suffered a chest wound in an assassination attempt earlier Wednesday, is now out of danger.

Bashir Kodzoyev, 34, with two non-perforating wounds in the hand and the chest, is still in the operation room but his condition is "more than satisfactory," the Itar-tass quoted hospital sources as saying.

Kodzoyev was attacked at about 1430 Moscow time (1130GMT) when his car was passing by a lane in downtown Moscow.

His driver, also his bodyguard, was shot dead on the spot and Kodzoyev was rushed to hospital.

An investigation is being conducted by a joint group consisting of specialists from the Interior Ministry, the Prosecutor General' s Office and the Federal Security Service.

Kodzoyev, an ethnic Ingush, was deputy director-general of the Irkutsk Ceramic Plant before being elected as a Duma member.

He is a member of the Unity party's governing body and deputy chairman of the State Duma's Northern and Far Eastern Areas Committee.
