Shaanxi Wants to Be Economic Power in Western China

Shaanxi Province in northwest China will work hard in the next five years to lay a solid foundation for making itself an economically strong province in the western part of the country, provincial Governor Cheng Andong said.

With the implementation of the national strategy to develop western China, the province, which boasts a well-development research contingent and rich human and natural resources, has entered a "golden period" of economic development, he said.

In the last five years, the province reported a growth rate higher than the national average. Its gross domestic product totaled 166 billion yuan (20 billion US dollars) in 2000, up nine percent from the previous year.

On this basis, the province will strive for a big leap forward in economic growth and an all-round social development, the governor said.

To this end, the province will work to attract capital, technologies and well-trained persons from outside, narrow the gap with the developed eastern coastal areas, increase the people's income, and create more job opportunities.

The province will further promote industrial restructuring and accelerate the development of high-tech, tourism, fruit-processing, defense, energy and chemical industries based on its rich resources. the governor said.

Efforts will also be made to step up the construction of infrastructure facilities for continuous improvements in the people's living conditions, he added.
