China Provides More Tech Assistance to Its Largest Nature Reserve

The largest nature reserve in northwest China, the source of three major rivers in China, will receive more scientific and technological assistance, according to the State Administration of Forestry.

The Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF) signed a cooperation agreement Tuesday with Qinghai Province, where the nature reserve is located.

The CAF, China's leading research institute in this field, will offer the latest research findings and technologies to the Province and send experts in a bid to improve the environmental protection of the nature reserve. The CAF will also jointly found a research center, according to the agreement.

The ecology in the nature reserve may not recover if it is damaged, and the changes in the environment there may influence the central and eastern regions of China as well as Southeast Asia, said Jiang Zehui, president of the CAF.

This nature reserve covers the sources of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers, with a total area of 31.8 million hectares. The Lancang River, originating in the Tangula Mountains in the nature reserve, is named Mekong after it enters into Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia.
