India's BJP Party Chief Resigns Amid Graft Charges

The head of India's main ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bangaru Laxman, resigned Tuesday night following allegations of corruption exposed by an Internet news and entertainment company, the Indian news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) said.

Laxman, who denied the graft charges, resigned after a meeting with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. Vajpayee's BJP is the main party in India's ruling rainbow coalition consisting a score of political parties.
