Tibet Scored Initial Success in Prevention and Control of Desertification

During the Ninth Five-year Plan period, Tibet has won initial success in the prevention and control of desertification by carrying out the key projects in valleys of the Yarlung Zangbo River, Lhasa River, and Nyang Qu River.

Up to now, with a total investment of over RMB 90million yuan, Tibet has brought 300,000-mu of desert under control and completed a forestation area of 800,000 mu.

The desertification situation is terrible in Tibet. Statistics of the relevant departments show that the area reduced to desert has reached 20.47 million hectares in a territory of 1.2 million square kilometer.

Although the work for prevention and control of desertification started late in Tibet, the regional government has attached great importance to it by mapping out a plan, i.e. "drawing experiences from various places to serve as guideline for the work in the whole area".

In the four demonstration regions in Tibet, the Tibetan forestry department has made great achievements and gained a lot of experience by planting trees and opening up water resources to protect farmlands and fight against wind, sand and drought.

As reported, during the Tenth Five-year Plan period, Tibet will make further efforts for the prevention and control of desertification by establishing a system for the work so as to promote a sound cycle of environment in the region.
