Foot-and-Mouth Disease Detected in ColombiaA case of foot-and-mouth disease was detected in north Boyaca, Colombia's central department, as the Colombian Farming and Fishing Institute (ICA) reported Wednesday.Olga Lucia Diaz, head of ICA's veterinary epidemiological team, clarified that it is not an outbreak, but an infection in one cow and two calves. Diaz indicated that vaccinations were carried out, disinfection programs were conducted, and fortunately the infection is under control, although necessary measures to prevent propagation are still in effect. She specified that at Pasto slaughter house, foot-and-mouth fever was found in pigs, but the animals have been slaughtered and the sector's respective disinfection was performed, and the animal health situation in this Colombian area can be guaranteed. Not only will authorities ban the movement of cattle from north Boyaca from the department's center and to the capital, Bogota, but the market itself will impose barriers to milk products coming from Boyaca.
