Taiwan's College Student Population Reaches 1 Million

The number of the college students in Taiwan has totaled 1.06 million in the current school year in the 150 universities and colleges on the island, reported the local media of Taiwan Tuesday.

The latest statistics from relevant authorities indicate that the present figures represent a more-than 21-fold increase in the number of schools and a nearly 160-fold jump in terms of student enrollment during the past half-century.

In 1950, there were only seven higher education institutions in Taiwan with a combined enrollment of 6,665 students.

At present, Taiwan's higher education institutions include 127 universities and four-year colleges and 23 junior colleges.

There are four universities which have each more than 20,000 students. Tamkang University tops the four with an enrollment of more than 27,000.

Thirty-six schools have each an enrollment of over 10,000 students, while 44 others each have an enrollment of below 5,000.
