S.Lankan PM Arrives in Karachi on Six-Day Visit to Pakistan

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake arrived Tuesday in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi on a six-day visit, said a report by the Associated Press of Pakistan.

The prime minister will hold separate meetings with Pakistani President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar and Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf for discussions focusing on the situation arising from the decision of the Afghan Taliban authority to destroy historical Buddhist artifacts as well as for exchange of views on bilateral relations between the two countries.

On the issue of statue destruction conducted by the Taliban, the Pakistani government "shares the concern of the Sri Lankan government," a press release from the Foreign Office of Pakistan said on Tuesday.

Pakistan has addressed several appeals to the Afghan government to "fully protect Afghanistan's rich historical monuments, sites and artifacts that are part of the world's cultural heritage," said the press release.
