National Engineering Technology Library Opens

National Engineering Technology Library was recently opened in Beijing, which was formed by this method: it did not require the building of new houses, what it needed was only adding several persons, some computer systems and gathering together documents and materials from several departments, which are to be shared by all concerned.

This virtual library has witnessed many-fold increases in its function and provides materials easy to consult, so it is favored by engineers and technicians. Currently, the library has taken in over 7000 titles of foreign periodicals and some 2 million scientific literatures available for reference.

To fundamentally solve the problems such as the redundant set-up of China's science and information institutions, the scattering of resources and the shortage of documentation resources resulted from price hikes for books and magazines, the Ministry of Science and Technology drew up a reform program for scientific information institutions in 1998, stressing the need for "unified purchase, standardized processing, inter-networking, and shared resources" The virtual National Engineering Technology Library was established last July by four units--China Sci-Tech Information Institute, Machinery Industrial Information Institute, Metallurgy Industrial Information Standard Institute and China Chemical Information Center.
