Japanese Navy Vessels Call at Malaysian Port

Three Japanese navy vessels Tuesday called at Malaysia's West Port, some 30 kilometers west from here, on a four-day overseas training course.

The vessels "JDS HARUNA DDH 141," "JDS HATAKAZE DDG 171" and "JDS UMAGIRI DD158" with a training squadron of 600 crewmen and 90 midshipmen from the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMDSF) onboard is on a month-and-a-half training to Brunei and Malaysia, fleet commander Captain Tameyoshi Hirayama said.

The course will cover the training of navy cadets, enhancing the seamanship skills of JMSDF navy officers as well as to obtain an insight into a foreign country, he said.

During the visit to Malaysia, they want to talk to the Malaysian people on various subjects and visit historic places to understand Malaysia, he said, hoping the visit will accelerate the relationship not only between JMSDF and Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), but also between Japan and Malaysia.
