Sri Lankan Tamil Rebel Suicide Bombing Plant Raided

Sri Lankan police seized large quantity of high explosives and other equipment used for suicide bombing attacks by separatist Tamil Tiger rebels at Dehiwela when a special police team raided a suicide kit manufacturing plant on Monday, The Island newspaper said on Tuesday.

Police said that the clandestine operation underway in the plant is believed to have been started to assassinate powerful politicians in the country.

Police suspect that several assassination mission including that targeting former Industrial Minister C.V. Gooneratne have been carried out by suicide jackets provided from this hideout.

Police said that the hideout was a major explosive and ammunition dump of the rebels for destructive suicide attacks in Colombo.

Of the three suspects taken into custody one had been identified as a leading member of the LTTE, they said. Further investigation is underway.

The LTTE rebels use suicide bombers to target senior politicians in the country. President Kumaratunga lost her right eye when a woman suicide bomber struck her during her presidential campaign in December 1999.
